Area Law Enforcement
Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say initial examinations indicate the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are currently not aware of any harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials announced they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
A senior political figure said the attack rendered him without words and required to be solved rapidly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
